Early Monkey Bidness

From 1983 until 1985, Bill Cole, Jere Ellis and Wardlaw Steele recorded as a trio, not really ever naming their "group."  They recorded two cassette records, that they gave out to friends: Christmas 1983 and Christmas 1984.

In 1985, Jimmy Calloway joined and Wardlaw came and went, and they began calling themselves "Howard, Howard and Fine."  They, together with Peter Keeble, who had also just opened his studio, Broken Door Studio, started to record at both Pete's place and Jere's new, Barking Dog Studio.

But it all got started with two Christmas records, one in 1983 and one in 1984 ... 1983 gave us Bily Cole's classic love song, "Carla C," and Jere's " Hard Work and Sweat" ...

And then, the following year gave us "Xmas '84," and began the tradition that carries on, today: re-recording songs.

One will notice that one is shorter than the other, like it's missing songs.  That's because Jere stole them in 1999 and added tracks to them for the Bidnessmen album, "Open Faux Bidness."  Those tracks, "Walk in the Shade," "Discontented Delight" and "Stay On," were initially picked by Jere to re-record.  When John protested, arguing that the originals were just too good, whether he was on the track or not, Jere then decided to add tracks, primarily organ, as well as adding or redoing vocals and more guitars, to the first two.  John made him leave "Stay On" alone. The version on "Open Faux Bidness" is the untouched original from "Christmas '84."

All attempts to re-record "Stay On" (by Bidnessmen, the Dirty Quarters - in two different keys, or Bill Davidson by himself) have proven to be less than satisfactory.  Bidnessmen had just begun to play it live, taking advantage of four vocalists, but they broke up before they could ever get into the studio with their new arrangement.  No one has managed to capture the feel of Wardlaw's original.

And then, in 1985, that Rock'n'Roll Classic:

In 1998, while waiting for Bidnessmen to get started on "Open Faux Bidness," John self-recorded this EP of love songs, inspired by a new friend ...
