Stay Out of Love

Wardlaw Steele, John Nichols  -  2000 Monkeybidness Music, Thurnic Music Co.

Since the breakup of Bidnessmen resulted in the formation of The Dirty Quarters, there were two songs that Bill Davidson wanted to re-do, pretty emphatically: Wardlaw Steele's "Stay On," and Wardlaw's and John's "Stay Out of Love," neither of which have him on the original record, but both of which Bidnessmen had worked up live arrangements before the break.  Four aborted attempts at recording "Stay On" (in two different keys, which Bill thought might be the problem) resulted in nothing that was worth keeping in the opinion of all three Dirty Quarters (the tracks just missed the "Bidnessmen sound" they had when the band was a five-piece with four vocalists, and three of them were not going to get that back, they decided). After he insisted, they did do the only thing John suggested in order to get him to agree re-do "Stay Out of Love:" they sped it up.

Since the release of the first version - a favorite of John's, despite Wardlaw's unhappiness with the lyric he asked John to write, something he told John years after the song had been recorded and worked into the band's live set - John had noticed that audiences seemed bored by the arrangement, and had removed the song from the the set, disappointed with the reaction of listeners. When Bill suggested re-recording it - not John's favorite activity, anyway - John agreed, only if the band picked up the tempo.  They did, and this is it.

Bill Davidson - drums, rhythm and lead guitar, backing vocals;   Jere Ellis - bass, backing vocals;   John Nichols - electric piano, piano, Hammond organ, lead and backing vocals
