Stay Out of Love

Wardlaw Steele, John F. Nichols - 2000 Monkeybidness Music, Thurnic Music Co.

In 1999, when Bidnessmen first started talking about hunkering down and recording what they hoped would be an album, Wardlaw called John over to talk about co-writing some tunes. John went home with four different ideas, only one of which Wardlaw was sure was formed enough to complete.  He had the progression, the "feel," the chorus and the first three lines of the first verse, expecting the song to be a celebration of a hot, passionate love affair.

But he gave it to John, whose first marriage had just fallen apart, and who heard an entirely different lyric in the tune.  He took Wardlaw's first three lines of the verse and went in an entirely different direction; he kept the chorus entirely; and, he took Wardlaw's tracks, sequenced and completed them, before taking it into Barking Dawg, where Jere added lead guitar, Wardlaw did his saxophone solo and the boys sang the vocals.

John was pleased with the result, but when the song was played live, it got little or no reaction, each time.  After several of those events, John removed it from the band's live set, refusing to play or sing it.

Recently, however, John was encouraged by the reaction of a musician who heard the original and liked it, so we have added both versions to the website as singles - this one, the original, and the Dirty Quarters remake, found on the Wooden Nickels page.

Bill Cole - backing, answering vocals;   Jere Ellis - lead guitar, backing vocals;

John Nichols - programming, lead and backing vocals;   Wardlaw Steele - programming, tenor saxophone
