Newly retired and working on his first, non-music project, John suddenly had the idea of this song just pop into his head (last verse first, of course), had the song written and arranged and figured he could get the guys to jump in and knock it out ... After some convincing he had to do of Jere that the verses of the song should be based around a sparse bass and drum foundation, he, Ray and Jere laid down the basic track with drums, bass and electric piano, stripped out the electric piano part until the vamp at the end and built the track from there, with both John and John Neff adding organ and horn parts, respectively, Ray leading a handclaps session, before finishing with Jere's smoking guitar.
Next, getting Billy Cole to sing lead with John's harmony, a la Bidnessmen days, was an extra cool addition. Only, instead of just octaves, John wanted Billy to hold the melody through the choruses and so, John took the harmony line.
One note to observe, the youngest person on this recording - the writer - was, at the time, sixty, and as John whispers at the end, "It's not so hard to let it go - It's not so hard ..."
